I grew up near Nottingham, spending much of my childhood helping at a local pedigree Charolais and commercial sheep farm, and quickly developing a love of farm animals. I went on to gain a BSc in Animal Science from Newcastle University in 2009, developing a strong interest in cattle reproduction along the way. I subsequently worked as an AI and RMS technician for Genus ABS in Northumberland, which I enjoyed immensely, placing me in good stead for a career as a farm vet.
I gained a place at vet school at the University of Liverpool in 2011 on their ‘fast track’ course, graduating in 2015 with distinction. During my time at university, I was fortunate enough to complete a three-week farm animal externship in upstate New York where I was able to build on the clinical skills learnt during my placements and rotations.
I then spent three years as a farm animal vet in rural Cheshire, gaining experience in a wide range of all aspects of farm animal veterinary work from smallholders to extensive systems. Due to a desire to expand my professional horizons and gain experience in alternative cattle production systems, in June 2018, I travelled to New Zealand to work as a locum cattle vet starting with the busy calving season. I spent 10 months working in the Waikato region of the North Island where herd sizes ranged from 180 to 2000 cows. Whilst many of the principles remained the same, it was a good opportunity to see how much farming practices can differ and what can be learnt from them all.
Upon my return to the UK, I set up DR MOO Ltd so that I could continue to enjoy the flexibility of locumming, and have not looked back since. I have been fortunate to work at some incredible practices across England, Wales and Scotland (link to testimonials page), and have met some great people along the way.
I am based in the Scottish borders and have my own trusty ‘DR MOO-mobile’ and the majority of kits required for all aspects of farm animal vetting including an ultrasound machine.
I am comfortable with all aspects of farm animal veterinary work and can offer the following services:
Routine fertility work
Sole-charge including OOH
APHA work
Competent in all aspects of surgery
Routine foot trimming
Sick animal work

We have employed Dan on multiple occasions, as he always delivers on his commitments, can handle any task thrown at him including health planning advice, APHA work, routine dairy beef and sheep tasks, sole-charge out of hours cover, and student teaching too.
It’s great to have a locum you can trust and his presence is always a boost for team morale.

We were delighted to have Dan with us for 2.5 months during spring and he was a great asset to our team in that time. He quickly built rapport with our clients and team, fitting into the team quickly and becoming popular with the whole practice as well the farm team. He's great at developing and supporting younger vets and played an important role in our teaching within the Glasgow final year farm animal rotation. Dan is very conscientious, keeping great clinical notes and working well with our support team in billing and stock control which made him a great role model for our team.
